Comparison of Internet companies in Barcelona

Comparison of Internet companies in Barcelona

Stay connected in your new home?

If you're staying in a monthly rental in Barcelona and you don't have a WiFi connection, you'll need to sign up for some sort of internet service, whether it's a long-term contract or just something for a few months. Here you'll find a list of major ISPs in Barcelona, including their rates for USB Internet, so you can choose the best service to suit your needs.

A USB modem essentially allows you to connect to the internet wherever you may be, so if your landlord doesn't allow you to make a long-term contract or you simply won't be staying that long in the city, this method is the ideal way to connect and is referred to as Mobile Broadband. If you do want fixed home broadband, there's also an offer for that in the list too.

1. Vodafone

One of the best options is the offer from Vodafone (webpage in Spanish or Catalan). You can get started for €49, which includes the USB modern with micro-sim card, connecting you wherever you go. If you want, you can even take the micro-sim and put it directly into your smartphone or tablet so you don't need to carry a laptop with you to connect to the internet on the go.

Tariffs and conditions:

  • 1.5 GB of navigation for three months is €15
  • There are no activation or start up costs after buying the modem.
  • The modem is activated at the moment of contracting the service and can be stopped at any time.
  • Required documentation: any proof of identity and a European or Spanish bank account (learn how to open a bank account in Barcelona here.
  • You can request the service at any Vodafone store in the city.

  • If the 1.2 GB limit is exceeded, velocity for the next month will be reduced.
  • There are no activation costs apart from the USB.
  • The service is activated at the moment of signing the contract and you can stop at any time.

If you're going to stay more than 6 months, Movistar (Website in Spanish and Catalan) offer a phone line and 10Mbps ADSL internet. If you need more speed, then you can opt for fibre optic Internet for €65 per month, but you may need permission from the apartment owner to install fibre optics to the house as they usually need to drill a hole in the wall and set up a separate line. Certainly worth the 100Mbps speeds if you're downloading large amounts of data.

Tariffs and conditions:

  • 10 Mbps download speeds for €48 per month or 100 Mbps Fibre Optic speeds for 65€ per month.
  • Without connection and disconnection costs after 6 months.
  • If you need to leave the contract before 6 months, then they will charge you an addition €120.
  • The line will be activated within a period of 2-3 days upon signing the contract. However, in the case of delays, you may be waiting up to 15 days!
  • Required documentation: Passport and a Spanish bank account.
  • The service can be contracted from any Movistar store

There is also Orange (website in English and Spanish ), where you can choose either a monthly or pay as you go mobile broadband tariff, both reasonably priced. The only drawback is the initial cost of the WiFi router is €79. Tariffs and conditions:

  • 1 GB of 3G navigation for only €8.95 per month on pay as you go. Alternatively you can choose the 4G monthly plan which includes 1 GB per month at €10.85/month. There is also a monthly plan of 3 GB per month at €10.85/month for the first three months and then €22.95/month from there-on.
  • Without additional activation/deactivation costs (in certain cases)
  • The line is available from the moment you contract it. You can leave without any costs if you use your own mobile router or tablet with the sim-card
